"My Weekend is all BOOKED!"
What's happening this week!
11/10/16- After much discussion and talk about the constitutions we have moved onto a "lighter" topic. The students have been reading fiction and non fiction stories. Within each story we have been practicing those reading strategies that help us gain a better understand of the text. They are being investigators while they look for correct evidence to support their answers.
10/21/16-Readers have worked closely with the book "The Creature Constitution" they understand the meaning of Constitution and the process put in place in order to get the rules established. At the end of the week they begin recounting or retelling the story using the strategy of (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then). Ask your child about recounting a story and see if they can tell you how to!
10/14/16- This week we completed our very first look back and write. The students were asked to independently look back into a story that we had read as a class to answer a question and provide three support details of evidence to support their answer. We will be working on this skill each month. Way to go for the first one readers!
10/7/16- All great writers have a purpose for what they are writing. The readers have been hearing various stories and determining the author's purpose. After they had heard the different types of stories, the students realized determining the authors purpose was as easy as PIE(Persuade, Inform, Entertain). As you are reading at home have a discussion about the authors purpose of books, posters, and signs.
9/30/16-We have started to look at Character Traits. The kids are starting to understand that a trait can be something on the outside or the inside of a person or character. When reading with your child ask them what they notice about a character, are they excited, friendly, nervous, sad, or any trait they can come up with! We have been working very hard at asking questions with a complete sentence and giving evidence to support our answer.
9/23/16-We are just starting to dive into "Good Fit" books. The learners have been picking various books out of the classroom library to find books that are interesting, and at their reading level. We will continue working on finding just right books for the next couple of weeks. Along with picking their books, they have built their reading stamina. Currently both classes are able to read for 8 minutes without getting up from their spot, starting right away, having their eyes on the book, and reading with a level 0 (reading in our heads). I must say we have some determined readers in here that boooo with the timer goes off because they want to keep reading. Wow! I am one lucky teacher :-)

At home you can help by asking some thick and thin questions!
Try This: After reading a story ask your son/daughter to act out what they just read! Getting them up and moving helps them to completely understand what they are reading!
Thick-(The answer takes time)
-What if...? -Why did...? -What caused...? -How would you feel if you...? -Why do you think....? -How did...? -What would happen if...? -What might...? -What character traits describe...? -Why is...? |
Try This: Trying choral reading with your child. Hearing you read will help them with the speed and expression they should be adding to their reading.
Thin- (The answer is quick) -When? -Where? -Who? -How Many? |
