3/17/17 Writers are working with a partner to research an owl from Maine. They are taking notes using "Tarzan Talk" . Then they will take those notes and cut the paper into strips to categorize and organize their notes. Next they will take those notes and write an 3 paragraph essay. Finally, they will present their information to the class using a visual presentation.
12/2/16 Over the last few weeks, writers have been working hard on sketching (planning), revising/editing, and conferencing using their personal narrative stories. It is so impressive when writers think they are done writing, but then they listen to their peers' stories and decide to add more details to their stories. Our focus this week has been on writing clear introductions and leads (hooking the reader).
10/21/16 Writers added sound words to make their writing more interesting so the reader could visualize their story. Writers also practiced writing complete sentences using nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
10/14/16 With many supporting stories, students are adding details to their stories with precise verbs, and sound words to create a picture for the reader.
10/7/16 Writers chose a topic from their heart maps or idea bank and began writing their seed stories. They also focused on writing complete sentences that included at least a subject and a verb.
9/30/16 We read the book, The Relatives Came and writers made connections and listed them in their idea bank. Writers also focused on writing a seed story instead of a watermelon story. They "zoomed in" on a small moment of time in order to write about less, but with more details.
9/23/16 This week focused on the reasons authors write and the meaning behind their stories. Writers also brainstormed and filled out a heart map with topics and memories that are closest to their heart. They have so many great ideas, that they are getting anxious to begin writing their stories. :-)
